The continuous effort being made by students of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) to help children belonging to the lower strata of society to get education so that they could live with dignity is nothing less than a movement, Ms. Saswati Das, SOA’s Vice-President, has said.

Many of the students, who are members of the ‘Jaago’ club, have been teaching slum children in their leisure hours after classes and helping them to learn the art of facing life, Ms. Das said while speaking at a program organised by the club here on Monday.

The activities undertaken by ‘Jaago’ exemplifies the commitment of the students to the society, she said.

The program was organised to distribute school uniforms among the slum children who come to the Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER), faculty of engineering and technology of SOA, daily for their personalized tuition and care.

Ms. Das distributed uniforms to around 80 children on the occasion.

Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda, Vice-Chancellor of SOA, who attended as the guest of honour, emphasized the need for students to work for the betterment of the society. “Our intention is that while receiving higher education, the students should also go back to the society as responsible citizens,” he said.

The program was attended by Prof. Manjula Das, Controller of Examination, Prof. Neeta Mohanty, Dean, Institute of Dental Sciences, Prof. Renu Sharma, Additional Dean (Students’ Affairs), Prof. Debahuti Mishra, Head, Computer Science Dept. ITER and Jaago’s faculty coordinator Prof. Anita Panda.
