Nurses urged to be extra careful while treating patients

As increased and frequent medication carries the risk of harm, nurses working in hospitals have to be responsible and extra cautious while taking care of patients, Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) said on Wednesday.

Narrating his personal experience, Prof. Nanda said nurses should be well versed with the reaction often caused by the administered drug and the medication protocol to ensure better treatment of the patients.

Prof. Nanda was speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a two-day Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) program on the theme ‘Medication Management and Prevention of Medication Errors’ jointly organised by Odisha state branch of Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI) and SUM Nursing College (SNC), faculty of nursing of SOA.

Education and research was extremely important in any profession, Prof. Nanda said while urging nurses to use their discernment while treating patients.

The CNE’s objectives were to help nurses understand medication management and errors, identify different types of medication errors and manage and prevent medication errors at different levels.

The inaugural session was also addressed by Prof. (Dr.) Fulana Kumari Dei, President of Odisha branch of TNAI and Prof. (Dr.) Ritanjali Sahoo, Chairperson, Education and Research Committee of state branch of TNAI.

Prof. (Dr.) Dei said TNAI, the oldest organization of nurses in India, had five lakh members and it was providing financial assistance of Rs. two lakh to its members suffering from serious ailments for their treatment. Besides, it would be extending pensionary benefit of Rs. 5000 per month to its members, she said.

Prof. Pravati Tripathy, Dean of SNC, welcomed the guests while Prof. Debajani Nayak, Coordinator of the program, proposed the vote of thanks. SNC’s Associate Dean Prof. Sasmita Das, IMS and SUM Hospital’s Nursing Superintendent Ms. Minati Mishra and Additional Nursing Superintendent Ms. Sobharani Samal were present.
